Making money in stock photography

Stock photography websites make money - It is good reading for any of us as it nicely encapsulates what we should all be thinking about when we are talking our photos – yes, stock photography has some additional rules perhaps – leave more space than you would in a “fine art” photo for a potential caption or message, but in general the ideas about good composition and impact apply across all fields of the visual art. A quote found online:companies like istockphoto, or any other operation that is open to submissions from the general public, which licenses images for peanuts, is not going to be serving the interests of the bulk of the photographers who submit pictures (that's a polite way of saying it isn't even worth the time of most contributors, but that doesn't stop them going fishing). Firstly, this is not really about rf or rm – if you recall one of my previous attempts to clarify rf, rm, editorial and commercial stock, rf and rm are just two different licensing types – rf gives the widest license as it allows the use any number of times for ever whereas rm defines the specific use case that the image is being licensed for. One says that you should actually provide enough income for the first several years, but if you're consistent and persistant, also creative (and most of all – work something else, and the income from the stock images would be like a bonus 🙂 ), you would be pretty happy in the end.
