King Mihai wants Constitution changed

Nr. 3926 de vineri, 11 mai 2007

Together with the Royal Family, his Majesty King Mihai I of Romania attended yesterday's events dedicated to May 10, taking place in the Castel Films Studios and the Elizabeta Palace, where he was awarded the "Hanno R. Ellenbogen Citizenship" prize.

King Mihai took this opportunity to urge Romanian politicians to focus on the making of a stable, European Constitution instead of attempting to weaken the country. On behalf of "the long years in the service of the nation", King Mihai demanded politicians to prove their instinct of national good, leave personal reasons aside and provide Romania with a European Constitution "stable and looking ahead".

The King argued: "This is the beginning of a European and Atlantic institutional way. The Romanian nation has got one more historical step to take. It is not of political nature. It is one regarding national identity and the country's future. Out of respect for our traditions and democracy, Romania needs to elaborate a European constitution to provide state institutions with clear, unambiguous and complementary roles." He warned that anything far from such a step would only weaken Romania and get more and more to deny it.

The King emphasized the importance of European and Atlantic values and alliances, arguing that the kings and queens of Romania had taken efforts for 140 years to head Romania to such values. He recounted: "I was honored to become the King of Romania exactly 80 years ago, in 1927, when none of today's politicians was born. My oath as King demanded me to protect the Constitution and the Romanian people's laws, national rights and territorial integrity. I was taught that love for the country and care for its future were our only aim." (...) (R.I.P.)
